It would be nice to have a screening system that would separate the critters into foods for differently sized fish. That plus it's got too much junk in it, to dump the unrefined product into a nicely decorated tank

This method is great. Specially if you live in a place where you can openly keep a green water pool with correct (minimal) mechanical filtration and seed it with the right invertebrates, plus those provided by nature. Not impossible indoors, but definitely easier outdoors in a warm climate.
I know Larry also practices this in summer.
