re: Heiko in the slammer!

the government of Brazil lays charges against people who are obviously interested in science and even sometimes in rehabilitating orphaned animals- and turns a blind eye to ships full of wood stolen from the rainforest , year after year.

A new wing of a museum in Spain was built using stolen wood.
and the same couple of companies were raided just last year in a mock cleanup.

so the Genius of the Government of Brazil can figure out that Heiko is interested in and dedicated to booking as many species as possible, but they can't figure out how the same couple of companies safely export the ranforest wood year after year.

Heiko has done more for the natural sciences than a thousand governments of Brazil ever would.

I haven't heard of him criticizing any political system or rulings. Don't know.
The high standards set seem to be unenforceable due to the large areas and many opportunities, and they easily beocme merely tools to selectively enforce with.

I understand that soy farming is the biggest threat ever to the Brazilian Amazon, it's already produced the most devastation in some areas from what I hear.

Mining companies can find ways to get in these protected areas I think.

There maybe also another curious way. Heiko know whole jungle areal and can talking also with indians. Who know, what he in his trips saw. For too much people he can be uncomfortable. Where take ecological institutes as IBAMA money for their existention? Maybe from industrial loby, what take Amazonian´s forests for wood, maybe from farm sector, maybe from energetic loby, what want building their reservoir dams? Heiko could been "stamp on somebody´s verruca" also or saw something, what didn´t determined for stranger eyes there.

Heiko has always praised highly the Brazilian people, especially the native American Indians but he has been openly critical of the poor environmental policies of the Brazilian Government.

The Brazilian Government is blatantly trying to make an example out of Heiko and Natasha in order to warn everyone else who wishes to do research and not exploitation to keep their mouths shut.

Their choice to use such a high profile figure will backfire on them and if anything untoward happens to them in the hellholes that pass as jails/prisons in Brazil, then Brazil should be subjected to some very severe sanctions from the international community. They should be subjected to some severe sanctions, period, for their actions.
